Construction and engineering firm Aecon Group Inc. has won a contract for additional work related to the Sturgeon Refinery Project in Alberta, Canada.

Awarded by North West Redwater Partnership (NWR), the C$109 million contract includes structural preassembly of modules, modular to modular interconnects, as well as installation of mechanical equipment and instrumentation. Work is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2016.

Last year the company won contracts valued at approximately C$230 million for structural steel erection, fabrication and module assembly at the new refinery in the Alberta Industrial Heartland Area.

The facility is being built to convert bitumen from Alberta's oilsands. It is planned to have the capacity to process approximately 79,000 barrels per day (bbl/d) of bitumen blend feedstock (50,000 bbl/d of bitumen) into approximately 80,000 bbl/d of refined products, including ultra-low sulfur diesel and diluents.

Total construction costs for the refinery are estimated at C$8.5 billion and it is scheduled for completion in September 2017.

Welcoming the latest contract award, Aecon's president and CEO, Teri McKibbon, said: "Aecon's commitment to successful execution and our unique partnering approach often leads to repeat business with top tier clients such as NWR. The work performed on this particular contract also highlights Aecon's turnkey capabilities with our ability to self-perform a majority of the scope for major projects."
