CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Emergency crews responded to a chemical leak at a Citgo refinery in Corpus Christi, Texas, Monday evening, KRISTV.com reported.

At about 8:00 p.m., chemical sensors detected a leak from an alkylation unit, which is used in the production of gasoline.

The sensors activated a sprinkler system that created a “water curtain” around the release, preventing any chemicals from escaping.

Firefighters were called in to perform air monitoring, but picked up no traces of chemicals outside the refiner.

The malfunctioning alkylation unit is the same unit that leaked hydroflouric acid back in July of 2009, causing a large fire at the plant, the article stated.
