SHELBY, Mont. — Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer said his office has conducted a feasibility study on a plan to build a major pork processing plant in the city of Shelby, KXLH.com reported.

Schweitzer recently returned from a trip to China where he says the demand for pork is incredibly high.

According to the feasibility study, the plan could provide a processing plant for more than 70 Montana pork producers and create more than 400 jobs.

“What it does is creates a market for Montana grain,” Schweitzer said. “So some of you know that when you are feeding Montana cattle and they are on a diet of grain, you need to feed them eight pounds for every pound of beef they make. But pigs are about twice as efficient, so it''s about four pounds of grain for every pound of pork."
