W.R. Grace has agreed to acquire chemicals maker Synthetech for $19.2 million. The Albany, Ore.-based company specializes in manufacturing organic synthesis, biocatalysis and chiral technologies used in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. The company had revenue of $15.2 million last year. W.R. Grace, which is based in Columbia, Md., said the acquisition will help expand its offerings to the pharmaceutical sector. Synthetech employs 63 people, primarily in Oregon and at a research and development facility in San Diego. Its products are used in drugs under development or on the market for the treatment of AIDS, cancer, cardiovascular and other diseases. The company will become a part of Grace Davison’s Specialty Technologies business. Grace expects to complete the transaction in the fourth quarter.
