MarketWatch reports that BP outlined alternative options to try and plug the oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico if the "top kill" operation due to start within the next few days is unsuccessful. The company said an alternative is to cut the damaged riser from the top of the blow-out preventer leaving a cleanly-cut pipe. A cap could then be connected to a riser from the drillship above, which should capture most of the oil and gas, the company said. Other options include lowering a second blow-out preventer or a valve, it added.
