SARNIA, Ontario — A chemical spill advisory was issued early Saturday morning after a ship docked near Port Huron began leaking ethylbenzene into the St. Clair River, The Times Herald reported.

Water treatment plants along the St. Clair River south of Sarnia’s Chemical Valley closed their water intakes for about four and a half hours after the spill, which has since been contained.

Ethylbenzene is used in the manufacture of styrene, which is used in products such as rubber, plastic, insulation, pipes, food containers and carpet backing.

The cause of the spill is under investigation.
