MIDLAND COUNTY, Texas — A 30,000-pound container holding ammonium persulfate suddenly burst into flames Friday afternoon at a Chemplex chemical yard in west Texas, forcing workers to evacuate, NewsWest 9 reported.

Officials blamed the 100-degree temperature for the explosion.

"These 100-degree temperatures and if there''s a little bit of moisture and they came in contact with that moisture, it would have caused it to oxidize and catch on fire," Midland Fire Marshal Jeff Meiner said.

All workers were evacuated and the yard was shut down as firefighters worked for nearly six hours to extinguish the fire.
