LAGOS, Nigeria — A militant group has claimed responsibility for an attack on an Nigerian oil pipeline Saturday night, according to ABC News.

In an email sent to journalists, The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, also known by the acronym MEND, said it “attacked and destroyed” the pipeline owned by Eni SpA, a Nigerian subsidiary of Eni.

Witnesses said they heard a blast from their homes as the pipeline caught fire.

This is the group’s first attack in months as its alleged leader, Henry Okah, awaits trial on terrorism charges in South Africa.
