MELBOURNE, Australia — About 1 million chickens were seized from a major poultry producer near Melbourne because the company could no longer afford to feed them, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported.

The Victorian Department of Primary Industries (DPI) said Tip Top Poultry, based in the Melbourne suburb of Thomastown, was in severe financial trouble and the department stepped in when it became apparent there were animal welfare concerns.

"It''s very disappointing to think that a situation could get to this stage," said Hugh Millar, executive director of bio-security for the DPI. "There may well be legal proceedings taken, but our immediate concern was for the welfare of the birds.
