WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of State announced Friday
that a proposed 1,700-mile pipeline between Alberta, Canada, and Texas could be
built without significant environmental damage, CNN
The $13 billion project, known as Keystone XL, has been
sharply criticized by environmentalists, who have staged a two-week
demonstration in Washington, D.C.
Supporters of the pipeline say it would create jobs and help
the U.S. replace Venezuelan or Middle Eastern imports with well-regulated
pipeline now must pass through a 90-day review period. A final decision is
expected by the end of the year.
