Stanford University to open water recovery center

Stanford University will soon be able to test various water and energy recovery methods in its brand new research center. The William and Cloy Codiga Resource Recovery Center will cost about $3.5 million and has been partly funded by the couple the center will be named after, who donated $1.5 million.

The groundbreaking ceremony was held on March 25, the university announced. The center will focus on developing innovative and sustainable approaches to recovering clean water, energy and materials from wastewater, including mobile technologies suitable for remote locations. Ultimately, researchers working at the center will be aiming to achieve results applicable for commercial development, commented Richard Luthy, engineering professor and project organizer. The center will also serve as a test field where new technology will be showcased.

Luthy explained that water reclaimed through such technology could be used to for irrigation and street cleaning, which could have a significant effect on California's water supply system amid the severe drought it is experiencing. The first project that researchers will be working on has already been started by Stanford professor Perry McCarty. The method uses anaerobic technology that can recover clean water and energy from wastewater.

Currently, Stanford University is looking for more private donors, as well as industry representatives, willing to contribute to completion of the research center and to fund its projects.
