American LEWA''s M800 Pump one year later

American LEWA''s M800 Design Pump Head has opened the door on the current flow and pressure limitations for the production of extruded foams. The increased flow and pressure capability of the M800 has already benefited one LEWA customer from the synthetic fibers and plastics industry. Production speed and product quality are key in the manufacturing of extruded foams. The installation of a LEWA M800 pump head allowed this customer to inject their agent at a higher flow rate against their extruder pressure of 500 bar. Thus, more blowing agent being metered into their system allowed for an increase in production speed and more product is now generated per day. Today''s physical blowing agents most commonly used are carbon dioxide, propane/butane mixtures and halogenated hydrocarbons, at pressure up to 500 bar. The higher the pressure, the more compressible the agent becomes so only a small amount of the blowing agent can be uniformly added into the plastic melt. Upgrading the metering equipment to a LEWA M800 pump head having the higher 800 Bar working pressure limit simply allowed for more blowing agent to be delivered uniformly to the extruder at the system 500 bar then the existing conventional pump did. Aside from the basic control configuration involving the M800 LEWA metering pump head and the need for a larger flowmeter, the enhanced capacity worked increasing the extruder output by nearly 9 percent capacity. American LEWA is confident that all types of extruders could enhance throughput results with the upgrade to a LEWA M800 pump head that is designed for working pressures of up to 800 bar. The image is of a typical blowing agent injection system that was designed and supplied by LEWA''s parent company, LEWA - A Unit of the HERBERT OTT- GROUP. This design integrated the metering system directly into an existing customer''s process control system. Due to the compact design of the M800 PTFE diaphragm head compared to its larger "metal" diaphragm predecessors, this design offers the following benefits to their production process:
• Operational safety and proven quality,
• Wider flow rate and pressure adjustment ranges possible,
• Proven expertise from LEWA regarding the metering of fluids and liquefied gases.
LEWA will explore these markets with an eye for the upgrading of existing equipment for their M800 product:
• Manufacturers of extruded foam products (construction materials, insulating materials /panels /foams, packaging materials, pre-shaped,
• Molded parts, e.g. sub-suppliers to the automobile industry.
The M800 was a Breakthrough Product of the Year Award recipient in 2002.
