SHIFANG, China — Thousands took to the streets last week in Shifang, China, to protest the building of a $1.6 billion molybdenum-copper refinery, Reuters reported.
The disgruntled residents believe the plant would be an environmental hazard and could lead to increased cancer rates in the community.
The city government, which held a signing ceremony for the project on June 30, quickly called off construction in response to the protest, but many believe the city still plans to build the plant.
"They''re liars!" said Shifang resident Lao Zhou. "Nobody believes they won''t build it eventually."
