WILMINGTON, Del. — More than 1,000 Latin American banana plantation workers are suing Dole Foods, Chiquita and Dow Chemical for allegedly exposing them to dibromochloropropane (DBCP), a banned chemical in the U.S., Bloomberg reported.

The pesticide has been linked to sterility, miscarriages, birth defects, cancer, eye problems, skin disorders and kidney damage, according to the complaint filed since May 31 in federal court in Delaware.

DBCP was allegedly sprayed on fields in Costa Rica, Ecuador and Panama to eliminate microscopic nematode worms, and workers “wore no gloves, protective covering or respiratory equipment” and none of the defendants “ever informed them that they were in danger,” the plaintiffs said in court papers.
