SHETLAND, Scotland — Oil giant BP has revealed contingency plants to clean up a hypothetical oil spill off Shetland, BBC News reported.
BP submitted its “worst-case scenario” Oil Pollution Emergency Plan to the UK government in a bid to gain approval to start drilling a new exploratory well 80 miles northwest of the Shetland islands early next year.
In the proposal, BP outlined a potential situation involving a leak of 75,000 barrels a day for 140 days — a total of 10.5 million barrels of oil.
It said it had incorporated the lessons learned from the Deepwater Horizon incident into the overall planning for the well.
