WASHINGTON — According to a study by consumer advocacy group Center for Science in the Public Interest, high levels of a chemical that causes tumors in animals were found in Coca-Cola Co. and PepsiCo. Inc. soda products, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

The chemical 4-methylimidazole, which was found in Coca-Cola, Pepsi Cola, Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi, is part of caramel coloring used in the beverages and has been linked to cancer in rodents.

However, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration says there is no reason to believe there is any immediate risk from the substance.

According to FDA spokesman Douglas Karas, a consumer would have to drink more than a thousand cans of soda in a day to match the doses administered in studies that showed links to cancer in rodents.

This is just more scare reporting that ignores the facts. This is like the "Alar" (daminozide) in apples report from the 80's. Back then a "Consumer advocacy" group reported that apples had small amounts of this product on them. It was described as a dangerous carcinogen, but testing was not complete ,and in fact more extensive test showed that in order for the exposure to be dangerous the average person would have to drink 5000 gallons of apple juice in one day. And for the chemical in this report to be dangerous you would have to drink 1000 cans in a day. These scare reports ignore the fact that we are surrounded by naturally occurring carcinogens (such as sunlight - and aflatoxin (peanuts) - and tannins (coffee & tea)). Small exposures do not harm people.

At such concentrations, one has to wonder why bother in posting such "alarming" news
