NINGBO, China — Officials in the eastern Chinese city of Ningbo halted plans to expand a China Petroleum & Chemical Corp. plant after hundreds of residents gathered in protest this weekend, Bloomberg News reported.
More than 1,000 people protested outside a government building, handing out flyers and brandishing signs that warned of the environmental and public health impacts of the proposed paraxylene plant.
Paraxylene, which is used in the manufacture of plastics, paints and cleaning solvents, can cause adverse health effects if inhaled, ingested or absorbed through the skin.
The Ningbo city government issued a statement saying it “firmly opposes” the project and will study it more.
