Dutch scientists use stem cells to create lab-grown meat

MAASTRICHT, Netherlands — Scientists at Maastricht University in the Netherlands are experimenting with stem cells in an effort to produce the first lab-grown hamburger later this year, BBC News reported.

The researchers have used stem cells to create strips of muscle tissue that they hope will lead to the development of a more efficient way of producing meat than farming animals.

The muscle tissue, which resembles strips of off-white calamari in appearance, will be mixed with blood and artificially grown fat to produce hamburger.

“The reason we are doing this is not to show a viable product but to show that in reality we can do this," said Professor Mark Post.
