YUNLIN, Taiwan — Formosa Chemicals & Fibre Corp. shut down its 300,000-metric-ton-a-year styrene monomer production plant in central Taiwan following a fire Sunday afternoon, Fox Business reported.
The facility produces intermediate petrochemicals for other units under the Formosa Group and for other small local customers.
Formosa Chemicals President Hong Fu-yuan said the shutdown, which was necessary in order to conduct safety checks, may hit Formosa Chemicals'' revenue in August, although he said the impact likely wouldn''t be "too much."
He said the fire was extinguished within around half an hour after it started and he doesn''t know when operations at the facility will be restarted.
The facility is part of the company’s flagship Mailiao complex, which has a total of three styrene monomer plants with a combined annual capacity of 1.2 million tons.
