Numerous small- and large-scale explosions happen in the processing industry every year. Hammer mills, dryers and grinders in the processing industry are developing sparks and can cause silos and storage bins, dust collectors and conveying systems to catch fire or explode. The results are personnel injury or death, loss of revenue and expensive repair costs and downtime, even loss of customers. To avoid a possible disaster, a spark detection system should be installed in vulnerable dust collection system and conveying lines. Good housekeeping with removing all dusts behind equipment cavities and regular maintenance of process equipment to avoid the development of an ignition source are preventative measures against dust explosions. Furthermore, dust collectors should be installed outside the building or personnel areas and if appropriate for the facility, the installation of explosion detection and suppression systems is also recommended.
