Poultry meat is the cause of the most fatalities occurring as a result of foodborne illnesses, according to figures released by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The outbreak is linked to cucumbers imported from Mexico, the CDC said. So far, 14 people have been hospitalized.

The Foodborne Diseases Active Surveillance Network (FoodNet) report said that in comparison to a base period between 2006 and 2008, there was a 14 percent increase in the incidence of infections caused by campylobacter -- bacteria linked to many food products, including raw milk, poultry and produce.

As many as 90 percent of the people affected by the foodborne disease are elderly, pregnant women, newborns or have weakened immune systems, the CDC said.
