SAO PAULO, Brazil — Oil believed to have leaked from a Japanese-operated platform off the coast of Brazil has fouled a beach in Rio de Janeiro, CNN reported.

The oil was discovered on Bonfim Beach during a flyover Sunday, the article stated.

Authorities said they would initially levy a $5.4 million fine on Modec, the rig operator.
