January 5, 2012

MINNEAPOLIS — An alert was declared at the Prairie Island Nuclear Generating Plant Thursday morning after workers discovered sodium hypochlorite leaking from a tank in the screen house, reported.

Sodium hypochlorite, commonly known as chlorine bleach, is used to treat water that is brought into the plant for cooling.

There was no release of radioactive material associated with this event, and it poses no danger to the public, the article stated.

The cause of the leak is under investigation.
