Beef Products Inc. lays off 86 workers due to ‘pink slime’ misinformation

May 16, 2012

DAKOTA DUNES, S.D. — Beef Products Inc., the maker of a controversial beef additive dubbed “pink slime” by critics, announced it is eliminating 86 more jobs, Bloomberg reported.

In March, the company said it halted production at three of its four plants in three states for 60 days due to the controversy surrounding its ammonia-treated beef product.

The new job losses are “directly attributable to a widespread campaign of misinformation” about the company’s ammonia-treated beef, BPI said in a statement.
