Bumble Bee Foods worker dies in industrial cooker
SANTA FE SPRINGS, Calif. — A 62-year-old Bumble Bee Foods plant worker died Thursday morning after he became trapped in an industrial cooker, Whittier Daily News reported.
The man was identified as Jose Melena, a six-year employee of the Santa Fe Springs-based business.
An initial investigation by the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal-OSHA) indicated that “he was fatally injured when he was cooked in an oven.”
It is unclear how Melena ended up inside the industrial cooker.
"The entire Bumble Bee Foods family is saddened by the tragic loss of our colleague, and our thoughts and prayers are with the Melena family," said Pat Menke, vice president of human resources for Bumble Bee Foods. "Operations at Bumble Bee Foods'' Santa Fe Springs processing plant have been suspended since [Thursday] morning to allow for a thorough investigation. We expect to be able to resume operations on Monday."
