Chemical Explosion at Waste Plant in England

October 12, 2010
The BBC reports, three people have suffered serious burns in an explosion at a waste management plant in West Lancashire. Sixty firefighters were called to PHS waste management in Burscough. Plumes of thick black smoke were billowing from the building and could be seen six miles away. One man was airlifted to the Royal Preston Hospital and the two others were taken by road ambulance to a local hospital. They are being treated for burns to their faces and hands. It is not yet clear what kind of chemicals are involved but gas tests on the smoke have found it is low toxicity. Police have cordoned off the estate and advised people to avoid the area and close their windows and doors.
