Chemist killed in biodiesel plant fire
HARVEY, La. — A chemist was killed and another worker was injured after a fire broke out Friday at the Gold Leaf Energy biodiesel plant in Harvey, La., fox8live.com reported.
According to investigators, the chemist was mixing sulfuric acid and methanol when the mixture exploded. Fire engulfed the building, killing the chemist and injuring another person.
Investigators are trying to determine if there were any unregistered chemicals inside the building at the time of the fire.
"It has something to do with biodiesel fuel and I''m told these types of operations are popping up all over the place so they''re really going under the radar so we need to get a handle and who needs to be held accountable," said Chris Roberts of the Jefferson Parish Council.
