October 8, 2007

Chevron Corp. has filed a petition in Ecuador Superior Court to dismiss an environmental lawsuit filed against the company, alleging judicial and attorney misconduct and governmental interference, according to the Associated Press. The company is currently on trial in Ecuador for allegedly failing to clean up billions of gallons of toxic wastewater in the country''s jungles. The class-action lawsuit seeks $6 billion in damages. Chevron''s petition alleges several instances of "inappropriate interference in the civil proceeding" by the judge, government officials, the prosecuting attorneys and their technical staff. The petition also alleges the court has not considered certain evidence that would aid Chevron''s case, and "demonstrated bias."
