Dow to increase Natreon production 35 percent
Dow Chemical Co. said its Dow AgroSciences LLC subsidiary is increasing production of its Natreon low-fat cooking oils by 35 percent in North America this year and plans to double production in 2007, the Associated Press reports. The food industry is under pressure to reduce what the company calls "bad fats," which raise cholesterol levels, clog arteries and increase the risk of heart attack or stroke, Dow said. The company calls Natreon a low-fat alternative to partially hydrogenated oils that produce trans fats. The company plans to produce more than 500 million pounds of Natreon oil this year, and more than 1.2 billion pounds in 2007.
