Eastman to expand England plant capacity

According to the Associated Press, Eastman Chemical Co. said it plans to expand production of its Estron acetate tow, a synthetic fiber used in cigarette filters. Eastman said it plans to increase production at its Workington, England, factory belonging to subsidiary Eastman Chemical England Ltd. The company did not disclose the amount of its planned investment. The expansion will boost annual capacity at the plant from 15,000 metric tons to 24,000 metric tons per year and is expected to be finished in the first half of 2008. At its completion, Eastman said its total worldwide capacity for acetate tow will reach 180,000 metric tons annually. The company said it is considering adding capacity in Asia, where demand growth for acetate tow is high.
