FDA to issue ruling on BPA-use in food, beverage packaging

March 8, 2012

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says it will make a decision about the use of the controversial chemical BPA in food and beverage packaging by the end of the month, CBS News reported.

The inquiry is a result of a National Resources Defense Council 2008 lawsuit and petition, asking that the FDA ban the potentially hazardous component, the article stated.

In September 2011, researchers from Breast Cancer Fund reported that many cans of kid-friendly foods included BPA, which mimics estrogen and has been linked in studies to increased breast cancer risk.
