Heineken to Purchase Czech Brewer

April 2, 2008
Heineken NV says it will buy Drinks Union, a Czech brewer, for an undisclosed sum, CNN reported recently.

Drinks Union, with 500 employees, has about three percent market share in the Czech Republic, Heineken said in a statement Tuesday, giving Heineken 12% market share overall.

The company cites "considerable growth opportunities in the Czech market" as the reason for the acquisition.

Drinks Union owns the popular Zlatopramen brand and three regional brands, Breznak, Louny and Dacick. In the Czech market, Heineken already operates Starobrno, Hostan, Zlaty Bazant, Krusovice and the Heineken brand.
