May 21, 2008
The H.J. Heinz Co. says it''s giving $350,000 in cash and in-kind services to earthquake relief efforts in China, the Associated Press is reporting.

Heinz has a plant in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province, which was the site of Monday''s earthquake.

While no Heinz workers or families were injured, Heinz CEO William Johnson says the company has a moral obligation as a corporate citizen to help.

The plant produces frozen appetizers, dim sum and desserts under the Long Fong brand. Heinz says facilities don''t appear to have been damaged. Production won''t resume until the danger of aftershocks has passed.

Employees will continue to receive their salaries. Heinz employs 4,500 in China.
