Kraft to divest Maxwell House plant

December 19, 2006

Kraft Foods Inc. is selling its Maxwell House coffee plant in Houston to Maximus Coffee Group LP for undisclosed terms, bizjournals.com reports. Included in the sale are the buildings, machinery, equipment and inventory, as well as 18 acres of property at 3900 Harrisburg. The sale does not include Kraft brands made at the plant, finished goods and coffee raw materials, nor the Minute Rice assets that are part of the recently completed transaction in which Kraft sold Minute Rice to Ebro Puleva SA. Once the sale is final, approximately 350 Kraft plant employees will have the opportunity to join Maximus Coffee Group. As part of the agreement, Maximus Coffee Group will produce coffee and powdered beverages for Kraft, as well as its own coffee products. Maximus Coffee Group will also continue the production of Minute Rice at the Houston plant and will produce Minute Rice until Ebro Puleva is ready to transfer rice production to its own facilities. Maximus is affiliated with Houston-based Cadeco Industries Inc., which has coffee processing, packaging and warehousing operations in Houston.
