Lightning strike shuts down chemical plant in Houston

June 20, 2012

HOUSTON — Lightning struck a chemical plant in Houston on Tuesday, forcing officials to shut down operations, Chron.com reported.

The strike occurred about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at TPC Group’s facility near the Houston Ship Channel. It caused the boilers to shut down, resulting in a loss of steam feeding into the plant and causing flaring and black smoke that could be seen for miles.

The plant produces butadiene, butene-1 raffinate, isobutylene, diisobutylene and polyisobutylene, according to the company’s website.
