Martek, Dow AgroSciences to team on canola seed

According to the Associated Press, Dow AgroSciences LLC and Martek Biosciences Corp. said recently that they have teamed up to jointly develop and commercialize a canola seed that produces the omega-3 fatty acid, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).
DHA omega-3 is considered important for proper brain and eye development and function. The production of a DHA canola oil by Dow and Martek is viewed as a cheaper option for various food uses.
The deal between the two companies is expected to take several years to create the healthier oil.
Terms were not disclosed.
Martek sells nutritional oils and dietary supplements. Indianapolis-based Dow AgroSciences, a subsidiary of Dow Chemical Co., is an agricultural company that develops crop protection, pest and vegetation management, seeds, traits and agricultural biotechnology.
