Merck settles Vioxx lawsuits

November 15, 2011

NEW YORK — Merck has settled lawsuits with three states claiming the company misled regulators about the dangers of the painkiller Vioxx, Reuters reported.

Attorney generals for New York, Florida and South Carolina filed the lawsuits against Merck in 2007 and 2008.

In 2007, Merck had agreed to pay out $4.85 billion to resolve claims from thousands of plaintiffs who said Vioxx caused heart attacks.

The undisclosed settlements were revealed in a court filing Friday.
