February 4, 2004
Reuters reports that agricultural chemical company Monsanto Co., won a patent dispute against Dow Chemical Co., for biotech-gene technology to protect plants from insect damage, the companies said on Tuesday. Dow said it was considering appealing the decision by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. The ruling that Monsanto''s scientists were the first to invent the technology ended a dispute that had dragged on for nearly eight years. The ruling involves Dow AgroSciences unit Mycogen Seeds. The technology in question is for synthetic "Bt" genes, which are inserted in plants to protect the crops from insect damage. Crops containing Monsanto''s synthetic Bt gene technology include the YieldGard Rootworm corn seed and Bollgard cotton.
