Republican bill could kill Keystone XL pipeline, State Department warns

December 13, 2011

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration is warning lawmakers that a Republican bill to fast-track approval of the Keystone XL pipeline could backfire, The Associated Press reported.

The bill backed by GOP lawmakers would require approval of the Canada-to-Texas pipeline within 60 days.

In a statement released Monday, the State Department said that an arbitrary deadline for permit decision could prevent the administration from meeting environmental laws that govern the approval process, the article stated.
