Sara Lee to close Milwaukee bakery plant

Sara Lee Bakery Group plans to cease operations at its Milwaukee plant by mid-October, leaving 105 employees without jobs, according to a report by bizjournals.com. The Clayton, Mo.-based division of Sara Lee Corp., Chicago, announced the planned shutdown in a notice with the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development. Initial layoffs are expected to begin Sept. 16 and be completed by Oct. 15, according to the notice. Sara Lee''s Milwaukee plant, located at 918 W. Somers St., primarily manufactured Sara Lee and EarthGrains wide-pan breads for distribution in the upper Midwest. D''Italiano breads and buns and Sara Lee, Holsum and Gardner''s hot dog and hamburger buns also are produced at the facility. Sara Lee management said the company will transfer production to other Sara Lee bakeries in the region, including Dubuque, Iowa, and Rock Island, Ill. The company will continue to serve Milwaukee area grocery retailers with a full lineup of bread brands and products. Sara Lee Bakery also operates plants in Madison and La Crosse. A plant in Eau Claire was closed in 2003. Sara Lee also announced it is ceasing production at the company''s plants in Birmingham, Ala., and Redding, Calif., resulting in a loss of 65 jobs between the two facilities.
