Shell may be prosecuted for North Sea oil spill

September 15, 2011

LONDON — Royal Dutch Shell PLC may face prosecution for the 10-day oil leak from its Gannet Alpha platform in the North Sea last month, Fox Business reported.

About 1,300 barrels of oil spilled into the North Sea from a leaking undersea pipeline at the North Sea platform between Aug. 10 and 19 in what became the U.K.’s worst spill in a decade.

Energy and Climate Change Secretary Chris Huhne confirmed that an investigation into the spill will be sent to Scotland’s public prosecutor.

“My department and the Health and Safety Executive have commenced investigations into the cause of the incident,” said Huhne.
