Sonoco Products to close Ohio paperboard plant
March 18, 2009
Packaging maker Sonoco Products Co. will close a mill in Lancaster, Ohio, that makes uncoated recycled paperboard, reports the Associated Press. The company will close the plant on May 16, its fourth mill closure over the last year. Sonoco Products said the Lancaster mill employed 58 people, and the employees will be offered severance pay and benefits. The company said demand for the paperboard is falling due to the recession. Sonoco said the Lancaster plant produced about 56,000 tons of paperboard per year. The closures of plants in Rockton, Ill., Montreal, and a machine in Holyoke, Mass., have reduced its uncoated recycled paperboard production capacity by about 150,000 tons per year.
