South Dakota to Receive $1.1 Million in Drug Maker Settlement

April 29, 2010

State Attorney General Marty Jackley says South Dakota will receive $1.1 million as part of a sweeping settlement with pharmaceutical manufacturer AstraZeneca that resolved allegations of illegal marketing of the company''s antipsychotic drug Seroquel. The Associated Press reports that the money is part of a $520 million settlement announced Tuesday in Washington by Attorney General Eric Holder. Prosecutors say AstraZeneca promoted Seroquel for uses that are not approved by federal drug regulators, including insomnia and psychiatric conditions besides schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. AstraZeneca denied the allegations leveled by the government but said it wanted to avoid the delay, uncertainty and expense of a protracted legal battle.
