Tyson pays $32 million to settle labor lawsuit

September 20, 2011

WASHINGTON — More than 17,000 Tyson poultry workers in 41 plants in 12 states will receive payments as part of a $32 million settlement that ends a 12-year-old federal lawsuit, according to The United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW).

In its complaint, UFCW alleged that Tyson failed to pay workers for time spent taking specialized protective gear on and off, which constitutes a violation of the Fair Labor Standards Act.

The lawsuit will result in payments, averaging around $1,000 per worker, to current and former Tyson workers across the country.
