October 26, 2011

ARLINGTON, Va. — The average operating rate of U.S. plants that make chlorine and caustic soda fell to 81 percent in September, Bloomberg reported.

The industry’s average operating rate for plants that make the chemicals known as chlor-alkali fell from 86 percent in August, The Chlorine Institute, based in Arlington, Virginia, said Tuesday.

Plants on average ran at 91 percent of capacity in September of 2010.

Chlorine is used to make vinyl products such as siding and PVC pipe.
