Venezuela Heinz Unit Says Strike May Cause Shortages

February 1, 2011

Bloomberg reports, H.J. Heinz Co.’s Venezuelan-unit warned that a union-led strike at its San Joaquin factory may create shortages of tomato sauce, gelatin and other products nationwide. The plant closed after workers blocked the entrance, Heinz said in a statement sent via e-mail. Heinz called on the union to return to the negotiating table and for workers to return to work. “Heinz warns that it has no other production center for those products in Venezuela, meaning that the stoppage at the San Joaquin plant represents the complete suspension of their production,” the statement said.
