FRAMINGHAM, Mass. — Massachusetts state researchers are offering to test private wells of 20 homeowners who live near General Chemical Corp. in Framingham to determine if a plume of toxins from the hazardous-waste storage facility has contaminated drinking water, The Boston Globe reported.

The offer to test wells for free at homes was part of the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection’s effort to determine if General Chemical has set aside enough money to fund a cleanup of the plume.

The plume, which dates back to the 1960s, is composed mostly of solvents used in degreasing and dry cleaning.
