ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — Sanderson Farms, a Mississippi-based poultry processor, has purchased a site in Nash County, N.C., where it plans to build a new chicken plant, NBC17.com reported.
The company will hire more than 1,000 workers once the plant is completed; however, a target date has not yet been determined.
"The timing of building that complex remains on hold until market fundamentals improve, including sufficient confidence that the global supply of feed grains will be adequate to meet world demand at reasonable prices," said Joe F. Sanderson Jr., chairman and CEO of Sanderson Farms.
The land purchased will serve as a hatchery. The company may also buy property for a wastewater treatment facility.
The plant will process about 50 million chickens a year, the company said.
