LIMA, Peru — Wastewater tainted with heavy metals escaped from the Atacocha zinc mine in Peru last week, contaminating at least six miles of the Huallga River, a tributary of the Amazon, The Associated Press reported.
The toxic wastewater, which contained mercury, cadmium, lead, iron and manganese, was released from a sedimentation well Wednesday.
The mine is owned by the Brazilian company Votorantim.
