Tyson, Smithfield to close plants

Tyson Foods, Inc. will permanently close one plant and consolidate another in the northwestern United States as part of a plan to "operate its fresh meats business more efficiently," the Associated Press reports. Tyson Fresh Meats, Inc., a subsidiary of the Springdale-based company, will permanently close its beef slaughter plant in Boise, Idaho, and scale back processing operations at its Pasco, Wash., complex on Oct. 16. The Pasco plant, which operates one shift of beef slaughter and two shifts of beef processing, will no longer receive beef carcasses from Boise and will operate one fewer processing shift. All 270 jobs at the Boise plant and approximately 500 positions at Pasco will be eliminated. Pasco will have a reduced work force of about 1,200. Smithfield Foods Inc. subsidiary Smithfield Packing Co. also announced it would close its Bedford, Va., plant as pork processing operations are restructured on the East Coast. Smithfield said it is winding down the facility immediately. The company said it will help the 139 workers at the plant find other jobs.
